Import Fees Inquiry
Hello everyone!
I recently bought a handbag from Japan, and I completely overlooked the import fees that apply in Australia. The total cost is over $1,000 but under $5,000. Since this is my first time purchasing something overseas that exceeds $1,000, I’m feeling a bit lost. Could anyone provide some advice? I’m particularly confused about what to expect regarding duties and how to pay them.
Thank you so much for your help!
Hi there!
No worries, it can be a bit confusing when you’re navigating import fees for the first time. Since your handbag is over the $1,000 limit, you’ll be required to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the value of the item, which in Australia is currently 10%. Since your handbag is under $5,000, you likely won’t have to deal with additional customs duties, as most luxury items are exempt from these unless they exceed a certain threshold.
When your package arrives in Australia, it will be assessed by the Australian Border Force. If duties and taxes are applicable, you may receive a notice from your postal service or courier asking for payment before you can pick up or receive your package. Payments for import fees can typically be done online through the delivery service’s website, by credit/debit card, or sometimes through direct bank transfer.
I recommend keeping your purchase receipt handy, as you’ll need it for the calculation of fees. Additionally, it can speed things up if you check with your delivery service ahead of time on how they handle import fees.
Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
Safe shopping!
