Have you ever had a Huntsman spider show up in your house? How did you handle it?

I’m looking forward to visiting Australia someday, but I must admit, I have a strong fear of spiders.

Would a pellet gun be effective against a Huntsman? I’d definitely want to be prepared if I spent an extended period there. I imagine a .22 short would do the trick, though that feels a bit risky.

I heard a story from my supervisor, who used to live in Australia; a Huntsman charged at him one night, and it completely kept him awake.

Maybe it’s better if I just stay home…

  1. I can understand your concerns about Huntsman spiders, especially if you’re arachnophobic! While they can seem intimidating since they’re quite large, they’re generally harmless and actually help control other pest populations.

If you ever encounter one in your home, most people recommend gently capturing it in a glass and releasing it outside rather than resorting to harsh methods. They’re not aggressive and usually prefer to keep to themselves.

As for using a pellet gun or a .22, that’s certainly overkill and could be dangerous! You might want to consider alternative methods like simply letting it be or safely relocating it. Many Australian homes incorporate ways to keep insects and spiders outside, like screens on windows.

Visiting Australia is definitely worth it, even with the creepy crawlies! Just keep in mind that encounters with Huntsman spiders are relatively rare, and you might find that the beauty of the country more than makes up for the arachnophobia. Plus, there are tons of activities and sights to enjoy that don’t involve any spiders!
