Assessing Basic Manners in Australian Office Culture: A Reflection

In today’s professional environment, maintaining courtesy and basic manners is fundamental to fostering a respectful and collaborative workplace. However, recent experiences suggest that some office settings may be falling short in this regard, prompting reflection on workplace etiquette and social norms.

Many employees, despite being highly skilled professionals earning competitive salaries, sometimes overlook simple acts of courtesy, such as maintaining cleanliness in shared spaces. For instance, communal kitchen areas are often left with dirty dishes overflowing from sinks, even when dishwashers are conveniently located nearby. Similarly, restrooms may be found with unflushed toilets or unattended paper waste, creating an unpleasant environment for colleagues.

Additionally, workspace etiquette is sometimes neglected, with individuals leaving personal belongings or uncleaned dishes on desks, expecting others to handle the mess. While we recognize that busy schedules limit time for such tasks, the question arises: how challenging is it to throw away trash or perform basic hygiene after using shared facilities?

This apparent decline in basic manners raises important questions about professional conduct and workplace culture. Are high-skilled professionals maintaining the same level of etiquette expected in a respectful work environment? Encouraging awareness and fostering good manners are essential steps toward creating a more pleasant, efficient, and respectful workplace for everyone.
