Honoring the Legacy of Australia’s Last Rat of Tobruk: A Life Remembered

The Rats of Tobruk Association has announced the passing of Thomas Page Pritchard, a revered soldier and the final surviving Australian veteran of the renowned Battle of Tobruk. At the age of 102, Tommy Pritchard departed on August 3rd, leaving behind a legacy that deeply reflects Australia’s military history.

Tommy’s service exemplified humility and dedication. He served with the 2/5th Field Ambulance during pivotal campaigns across the Middle East and the Southwest Pacific, contributing to efforts that safeguarded his comrades and advanced Australia’s wartime objectives. His lifelong commitment to remembrance and community made him a cherished member of the Rats of Tobruk Association.

His passing marks the end of a direct link to the approximately 14,000 Australian servicemen who fought in Tobruk during World War II. The association expresses profound gratitude for Tommy’s unwavering involvement and the enduring connection he maintained with fellow veterans and the broader community.

In accordance with Tommy’s wishes, a private funeral service will be held for his family. Additionally, a public memorial service will be organized in Melbourne, giving former servicemen, their families, and the public an opportunity to pay tribute. Details regarding the memorial event will be shared when finalized.

Members and supporters are invited to sign a condolence book at Tobruk House, which will be made available shortly. Furthermore, additional avenues to express respect and remembrance will be announced in due course.

A portrait of Tommy Pritchard, created by artist Peter Wegner in August 2023, accompanies this tribute, capturing the spirit of a veteran whose life embodied service, humility, and resilience.

The passing of Australia’s last Rat of Tobruk is a poignant moment to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices of all those who served in Tobruk. Their legacy continues to inspire generations, ensuring that their stories remain a vital part of Australia’s national history.
