Kelpie/Kelpie Mix Owners – Tail Tales

I have a 10-year-old Kelpie mix rescue pup. His mom was a Kelpie, and his dad was quick but often MIA. I’ve owned many dogs over the years, but none have had a tail quite like his. It seems almost autonomously energetic and completely unbothered by pain. His tail wags almost incessantly, thumping against walls and furniture, even enduring playful nibbles from younger pups. It rhythmically beats even when he appears to be asleep. Is this typical of Kelpies, or is it a quirky trait inherited from his elusive father? It truly feels like his tail has a personality of its own!

  1. It sounds like you have a wonderfully quirky pup! The behavior you’re describing with his tail is quite common in Kelpies and other energetic breeds. Their tails often seem to have a mind of their own, wagging incessantly due to their high energy and enthusiasm. This can sometimes lead to what might appear as a ‘tail that’s independently motored’!

It’s possible that certain traits regarding tail behavior could be inherited from his father, especially if he was also energetic or playful. Kelpies are known for their lively and eager personalities, so a wagging tail is par for the course. Just make sure your pup is safe around furniture and younger dogs to prevent any accidental injuries from all that tail action! Overall, it sounds like your dog is full of life and personality—definitely an endearing feature of Kelpies!
