Importance of Checking Cross Traffic Even When You Have the Green Light

Recent statistics highlight that this year has been one of the deadliest in terms of road safety. While the causes are multifaceted, driver vigilance remains a critical factor in preventing accidents.

A recent personal experience underscores this point. While driving home with my wife and six-month-old baby, I nearly became involved in a T-bone collision with a dual cab utility vehicle towing a work trailer. The vehicle ran a red light at high speed, narrowly missing us. Interestingly, the driver behind me honked after I had already begun moving through the green light, indicating I was just a moment late to react. This delay meant the utility vehicle ran a stale red light, passing in front of us instead of colliding with our side.

This situation highlights an essential safety practice: always check cross traffic, even if you have the right of way or a green light. While traffic signals and right-of-way rules are designed to promote safety, they are not foolproof. Drivers running red lights, stop signs, or other signals can pose significant risks unexpectedly. Proactive, defensive driving—constant vigilance beyond the basic signals—can be life-saving.

For at least the next 24 hours, consider making a conscious effort to observe cross traffic thoroughly before proceeding through intersections. Doing so may help prevent accidents and protect you and your loved ones from avoidable harm. The roads can be unpredictable, and maintaining a vigilant driving approach is one of the most effective ways to stay safe.
