Seeking Assistance for Authentic ‘Bogan’ Localization in Indie Christmas Horror Game

As an independent game developer, I am excited to share my latest project—a free, Christmas-themed horror game designed to entertain and challenge players during the holiday season. In addition to its spooky elements, I aim to incorporate authentic Australian vernacular, specifically the colloquial speech known as ‘bogan’—a term used affectionately to describe certain Australian slang and speech patterns.

My Background and Inspiration

A bit about my journey: I am an American with a deep appreciation for Australian culture. Between 2015 and 2016, I had the enriching experience of living in Australia. My time was split between working and exploring in Sydney for six months, a month in Cairns, and an additional three months on a family farm outside Townsville. I quickly grew fond of the local humor, the friendly community, and the stunning countryside. My admiration for Australian life remains strong, and I had originally planned to return for a second year to pursue agricultural work, but ultimately chose to stay in the States due to personal reasons—particularly my family.

My Efforts in Game Localization

Over the past few years, I’ve been developing hobby projects related to game localization. One of my recent achievements is a language selection system allowing players to choose from 24 different languages. While I relied on Google Translate for initial translations, I invested considerable time refining the system to provide a smooth user experience and better quality language options. This process has given me a newfound appreciation for the nuances involved in translation and localization.

Why a ‘Bogan’ Translation?

During my time working on the farm, I met numerous locals who proudly embraced their unique slang and speech patterns. They often expressed frustration over the lack of representation of their vernacular in mainstream media. I found their way of speaking to be colorful, genuine, and deeply rooted in Australian culture. I believe that incorporating bogan elements into my game could add an authentic and humorous layer that resonates with those familiar with Australian slang—or even introduce new players to this colorful vernacular.

My Request and Offer

My goal is to create a translation that genuinely captures the essence of bogan speech, not just for fun but with respect and authenticity. The game contains a notable amount of dialogue, but it’s manageable in scope—significantly less complex than a novel. Since the game is free, my budget is modest; I am willing to offer USD 50-75 to someone who can assist me in crafting an accurate bogan translation.

Call for Collaboration and Feedback

If you are interested in helping out, have expertise in Australian slang or dialects, or simply wish to share your thoughts, I would love to hear from you. I welcome honest feedback and perspectives on this project, as I want to ensure the translation is both respectful and true to the vernacular.

Closing Remarks

This project is a labor of love, and I am eager to collaborate with someone who can help bring an authentic bogan voice to my game. If you’re enthusiastic about Australian culture, dialects, or language localization, please reach out. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Note: This article is crafted to be both professional and engaging, emphasizing the developer’s passion, background, and respectful approach to language localization.
