Exploring the Lives of Australians Abroad: Where Are You Living and How Is Life Treating You?

The desire to explore new horizons is a trait many Australians share, and the trend of living abroad continues to grow among those seeking fresh opportunities and new experiences. Having recently come across discussions on platforms like Reddit’s r/Ireland community, I found myself inspired to pose a similar question to a broader audience: Where are fellow Australians living overseas, and what has their experience been like?

Reflecting on my own journey, I spent several formative years traveling and living overseas in my twenties. Those experiences were profoundly enriching, offering a sense of adventure and cultural immersion that I cherish to this day. Now, back in Australia for over seven years, I find myself increasingly drawn to the idea of returning abroad—this time, with a clearer mind and a handful of questions about the realities of expatriate life.

I am currently 34 years old, navigating a balance between age and opportunity. With a European passport in hand, I have the flexibility to settle in any EU country, although my language skills are primarily in English. Alternatively, a two-year visa option to Canada is also appealing, promising new cultural landscapes and personal growth.

This curiosity extends to others who have made the leap—whether permanently or for extended stays. What is life like for Australians living overseas? How are job prospects, the cost of living, and social integration? Has it been straightforward to build friendships and establish a community?

Since childhood, I’ve had an innate thirst for adventure, coupled with a deep fondness for Australia. It’s undeniably my home, yet the sense of being somewhat isolated from the rest of the world prompts a longing for global connectivity. Without the commitments of children or a partner, the opportunity to embrace overseas life feels particularly enticing.

If you are an Australian living abroad, I would love to hear about your experiences. Where are you living, and what has your journey been like so far? Your insights could be invaluable for those contemplating a similar path, offering a glimpse into the realities and rewards of making the leap into expatriate life.

Please share your stories and advice—your perspective might inspire others to explore new chapters beyond our shores.
