Exploring Opportunities in Coober Pedy

Hello everyone,

We’re a couple who recently received a job offer in Coober Pedy that seems perfect for fulfilling our 88 days. The position guarantees 38 hours of work per week, enabling us to complete our requirement quickly. The pay is excellent, and the accommodation is reasonably priced, making it a solid option for saving money and extending our visa.

That said, we’ve come across mixed reviews about the town. While we know it attracts tourists, we’re curious about what type of visitors come and how busy it gets. Additionally, we’ve heard concerns regarding the crime rates, which makes us a bit uneasy.

As a couple, we’re also mindful of safety, especially when working different shifts or if one of us needs to walk alone. Has anyone here lived or worked in Coober Pedy? We’d love to hear about your experiences. Is it a good place to consider, or should we explore other options?

Thanks for your insights!

  1. Hi there!

Congrats on the job offer! Coober Pedy is definitely a unique place, and I can understand your concerns. As a popular opal mining town, it attracts a variety of tourists, especially those interested in its underground homes, quirky attractions, and stunning landscapes. The busiest times tend to be during the peak tourist season (around May to September), but outside of that, it can be pretty quiet.

As for the safety aspect, while there have been reports of crime, like in any place, experiences can vary. Many people find that as long as you’re aware of your surroundings and take common-sense precautions (like not wandering alone late at night), you should be fine.

Living and working there can be quite an adventure! Many find the underground homes fascinating and the community welcoming. It’s a small town, so you may quickly get to know the locals and other workers.

Ultimately, it could be a great opportunity for you to not only fulfill your visa requirements but also to save money and gain a unique experience. If you can, maybe reach out to others who have worked there recently or join some travel forums for firsthand accounts. Good luck, and I hope you make the best decision for you both!
