Why is it that so many towns have an Apex Park?
Okay, not every town has one. But while driving through rural Victoria and South Australia, it seems like nearly every second town features a playground or park named “Apex Park.” I even checked Google Maps and found plenty in other states too.

What’s the story behind this? Is there some connection between the term “apex” and parks that I’m unaware of?

  1. The name “Apex Park” is quite common in Australia and is often associated with community parks established by the Apex Club, a service organization founded in the 1930s. The Apex Club focuses on community service and development, and many towns have created parks or recreational areas to provide a space for families and individuals to gather and enjoy nature. The term “apex” generally means the top or highest point, which may symbolize the goal of the Apex Club to promote the best in community spirit.

In many cases, these parks serve as a legacy of the service projects undertaken by local Apex Clubs, ensuring that the community benefits from a well-maintained space for recreation and leisure. So, there’s no deeper lexical connection between the word “apex” and parks; it’s more about the history of community engagement in Australia!
