What’s the last place in Australia where you’d want to find yourself stranded?
I’m asking because I’m currently stuck in Tenant Creek after my van broke down on the Stuart Highway. It looks like I’ll be here for a few days until a mechanic can take a look. I’ve heard mixed things about Tenant Creek (being a non-Aussie, I’m not too familiar with the local reputation), so I’m not exactly excited about my situation.
I’d love to hear from Australians who know the ins and outs of your country—where’s the least desirable place you’d want to be stranded for a few days and why? Let’s keep it to locations that are accessible by a regular passenger car and skip over those remote outback dirt roads, as that feels a bit too easy!
Being stranded in Tenant Creek definitely sounds challenging, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area! If I had to pick a last place in Australia to be stuck that’s accessible by a normal car, I’d probably say the town of Coonabarabran in New South Wales. While it’s not a bad town, it’s quite small and there isn’t much to do if you’re looking for excitement or entertainment. Plus, the nearest sizeable city is quite a trek away.
On the other hand, at least you’re somewhere with a bit of history and some lovely natural scenery around — and let’s hope the locals are friendly! Hang in there; hopefully, the mechanic will get you back on the road quickly. What’s the first place you’d want to visit once you’re mobile again?
