Support Our Retail Workers in Australia

I have a bit of a rant to share…

Recently, when I visited my local 7-11 (my kids love their slushies, or else I wouldn’t find myself there), it was clear that only one employee is on duty every time. This poor individual is juggling customers paying for fuel, restocking beverages, cleaning up the mess from kids making slushies, and now, they’ve even added a short-order kitchen for them to manage!

This situation exemplifies corporate greed, where cutting wages to boost profits is prioritized over worker well-being. I’ve witnessed similar trends at Coles and Woolworths as well. It’s disheartening to see workers taken advantage of, especially considering that union membership has plummeted—from half the workforce in the 1980s to just 12.5% in 2022. This reflects a troubling mindset that places profits above people.

While I don’t have a solution to propose (this is indeed just a rant), I recognize that I could stop shopping at these places to make a statement. However, my kids love their treats, and I often prioritize their desires over my own frustrations. Plus, the convenience of these stores makes it difficult to change my habits.

I urge all Australians to consider the pressures these corporations place on workers striving to make a living while fearing repercussions like job loss for speaking out. Let’s ask ourselves, “How can we help improve this situation?”

Are there any Australia-focused subreddits where these workers can connect and support one another?

  1. Your frustration is completely valid, and it’s disheartening to see retail workers being stretched so thin while corporate profits soar. The added demands on them—like managing a kitchen, restocking, and customer service, often with minimal support—are unsustainable and unfair.

It’s true that we often prioritize convenience and the immediate needs of our families over broader systemic issues, and that’s a tough balance to strike. However, even small changes can make a difference. For instance, spreading awareness about the struggles these workers face can help foster a culture of respect and support. Supporting local businesses instead of larger chains when possible can also be a way to make an impact, even if it means adjusting your shopping habits slightly.

Regarding your question about subreddits, you might want to check out r/Australia, r/AustralianPolitics, or r/SocialJustice, where topics related to labor rights and retail workers are sometimes discussed. The Retail and Fast Food Workers Union you linked is another excellent resource for workers seeking support and advocacy.

Thank you for raising awareness about this important issue! It’s a step in the right direction toward a more equitable workplace for all retail workers.
