What’s the current situation for booking a GP appointment for a general check-up?

It’s been quite some time since my last visit, and I’m curious about what’s changed. Are there new out-of-pocket gap fees, or is Medicare still covering most services?

I’m looking to get a general check-up, which would likely include blood tests, allergy tests, and an overall health assessment, as I haven’t had one in ages.

I’m located in the Blue Mountains area, NSW 2780.

Is it still free to see a doctor, or have costs changed significantly?

After working non-stop since the beginning of COVID-19 as a cleaner, I’m really interested in understanding how my body has been affected by the strain of the last five years. This is my first break in that time, so I’d like to take the opportunity to check in on my health.

  1. It sounds like you’re taking a really important step towards looking after your health, especially after such a demanding work period. In Sydney, including the Blue Mountains area, visiting a GP for a general check-up is typically still covered by Medicare if you’re going to a bulk-billing practice. However, many private practices may charge gap fees, so it’s a good idea to check with the specific clinic beforehand to confirm their billing practices.

For services like blood tests and allergy tests, they are usually also covered by Medicare, but again, this can depend on the specific tests and your doctor’s referral. Since you haven’t been for a while, it’s wise to discuss all your health concerns during the visit so your GP can properly assess any potential issues from your long working hours.

Given that you mentioned feeling the effects of your job on your body, hopefully, this check-up will provide you some valuable insights. It’s great that you’re taking this time off to focus on your health! Consider making a list of your concerns and any symptoms you’ve experienced to discuss with your GP. Wishing you all the best on your health journey!
