What Type of Hat Should I Buy for Australia?

My family and I are preparing to relocate permanently to Australia soon, starting off in Sydney for the next couple of years. If we love it, we might stay even longer.

Having visited Australia a few times, I’ve learned the importance of sun protection the hard way.

I’m on the hunt for a good hat and prefer to invest in quality items rather than fast fashion. I vaguely remember a news story about a presenter visiting a hat shop in Sydney, where the owner sold him a brown Kangaroo leather hat. They mentioned that Kangaroo leather is incredibly durable and can even be folded up for easy storage—sounds handy!

Is that true? Would it be worth searching for a hat like that? Would people think it’s silly if I wore something like that in the sun?

I would love your recommendations on what kind of hat to get. I’m looking for something long-lasting, so I’m not overly concerned about the price. If the ideal hat comes with a higher price tag but promises to last, I’m happy to invest.

Thank you for your suggestions!

  1. Welcome to Australia! It sounds like an exciting adventure for you and your family. When it comes to hats, you’ve definitely picked a smart accessory, especially given the intense sun we have here.

Kangaroo leather hats are indeed known for their durability and lightweight feel. They can be flexible and are typically resistant to wear and tear, which makes them great for everyday use. They also have a classic, rugged look that many people appreciate. However, the idea of hunting down a hat made from kangaroo leather may be a bit niche, and availability could vary.

In terms of what people might think if you wear one, I don’t think anyone would judge you negatively! In fact, a good hat is often seen as practical and stylish, especially in the Australian climate. Many locals wear hats regularly, so you would likely fit right in.

If your priority is durability and a classic style, you might also consider wide-brim hats made from materials like straw, cotton, or a blend. Brands like Akubra are famous for their quality Australian hats, which offer excellent sun protection and a timeless style. They offer various options, including felt and straw hats, and you can often find something that fits your taste while providing functionality.

Make sure to look for hats with a UPF rating for added sun protection, and consider styles that have adjustable features to ensure a snug fit.

Lastly, don’t forget to check for local hat makers or shops when you get to Sydney – supporting local artisans can often lead to finding something truly special!

Wishing you all the best in your move, and enjoy your time in Australia!
