Storm Alfred Update

I’m currently on the Gold Coast, and my home is right by the water. The pool has flooded, and we’ve had to drain it every day. Our pontoon is submerged, and the rain has been relentless for four days straight. We’re still without power, but our data finally came back this morning. Some shops are beginning to reopen, and we’re hopeful that schools will resume on Monday as normal.

Unfortunately, we still have no electricity, and we’ve lost access to hot water. We’ve managed to collect about 25 liters of bottled tap water, along with a few candles and flashlights, but we’re not really prepared for anything more.

If anyone has advice or safety tips for us during this situation, please share!

Stay safe, everyone! Fingers crossed that power is restored soon. 🙏🏻

  1. Hey there! I’m really sorry to hear about the tough situation you’re in with Storm Alfred. It sounds really challenging, but it’s great that you’re reaching out for advice. Here are some tips to stay safe and make the most of your supplies:

    1. Stay Informed: Keep your phone charged (if possible) to stay updated on weather alerts or any emergency announcements regarding your area.

    2. Water Supply: Since you’ve only got 25L of bottled water, ration it wisely. Use it primarily for drinking and cooking. If you can boil water for safety, you can also use it for washing or hygiene when necessary.

    3. Food: If you have non-perishable food items, focus on those. Canned goods, dried fruits, and nuts can be great options. Avoid opening your fridge and freezer too much to keep the food cold longer once the power is restored.

    4. Candles and Torches: Use candles only as a last resort and ensure they are in stable holders to prevent fire hazards. Keep flashlights nearby and use them when needed to conserve battery life.

    5. Staying Warm: If temperatures drop, dress in layers and try to keep warm blankets nearby. Staying dry is important, especially if you’re in a flooded area.

    6. Communication: Check in with neighbors, especially elderly or vulnerable people, to see if they need assistance. They might be in similar situations, and you can help each other out.

    7. Avoid Floodwaters: If there are flooded areas around your home, be cautious about venturing outside. Floodwater can be hazardous and might contain pollutants.

    8. Emergency Contacts: If your situation worsens, know whom to contact for assistance, like local emergency services or the Red Cross.

Remember, your safety is the priority. Hopefully, power is restored soon and conditions improve. Stay safe, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you need it! 🙏🏼
