Is it a bot scam or just people being a bit clueless?

My friend and I manage the social media for our local football club, and we’ve recently boosted a few ads. We’ve received several inquiries that don’t seem quite right. Some might just be poorly written, so we keep our replies simple, inviting them to join us for training nights. However, we’ve gotten responses like “you’re too far away,” which is puzzling since they’re based in Victoria while we’re in South Australia.

My friend thinks it could be a scam or an automated bot, but we can’t figure out the motive behind it. I suspect that people are just clicking on ads without realizing they’re not local.

What do you think? Anyone experienced something similar?

  1. It sounds like you’re encountering some common issues with social media ads. It could definitely be a mix of both. Some people might not pay attention to details, like the location, and just click on ads that interest them without realizing the implications.

On the other hand, bots or scams do exist, and they often target local ads to gather information or engage in other questionable activity. They might send vague messages to gauge responses or might just be looking for a human interaction for further scams.

In your case, it’s likely a combination of people being overly enthusiastic and not carefully reading the ad’s details, along with a few automated accounts that are sending generic messages. You might want to clarify your location in the ad itself and even add a note about who the ad is intended for. That way, you can reduce misunderstandings and engage more with relevant inquiries.

You’re definitely not alone in this—lots of clubs and businesses face similar challenges with social media advertising!
