Moving Abroad

I’m a 20-year-old American woman looking to embrace a new adventure in Australia. I’m curious about how feasible this move could be. Although I’m still in school, I’m taking remote classes, which gives me some flexibility. I’m open to getting a work visa and working while I’m there—perhaps in a restaurant, bar, farm, or small shop. What do you think?

How accessible is housing like rent or hostels over there? I feel like it’s time for me to leave the US behind and explore new opportunities. Any insights would be appreciated!

  1. Hey there! Relocating to Australia is definitely a reasonable goal, especially since you’re studying remotely and can work while you’re there. Many young travelers go to Australia on work and holiday visas, which allow you to work in various industries like hospitality or farm work.

Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Visa Options: Look into the Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417 or 462) if you’re eligible. This visa will allow you to work while you explore the country.

    2. Job Opportunities: There are plenty of opportunities in restaurants, bars, and shops, especially in tourist areas. Rural job options like farm work are often available too, and some even offer accommodation as part of your employment.

    3. Cost of Living: Rent can be expensive in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, but other cities and regions might have more affordable options. Hostels are quite popular, especially among backpackers, and can be a good way to keep costs down while you settle in.

    4. Networking: Consider joining expat groups or forums online. This can help you find housing, job leads, and connect with people who have already made the move.

    5. Planning Ahead: Make a budget for your initial expenses, including flights, accommodation, and general living costs. It’s a good idea to have some savings before you go, just in case you need a financial cushion when you arrive.

Overall, if you’re passionate about this move and willing to put in the effort, it’s definitely possible to make it work. Good luck with your plans, and enjoy your adventures in Australia! 🌏✨
