Seeking Travel Advice for China with a Toddler and a 6-Month-Old

Hello everyone! We’re gearing up for a two-week trip to China and are looking for some guidance.

Last year, we successfully traveled to Japan with our first child when she was just 6 months old, and it was a wonderful experience. Now, with two little ones in tow, we’re excited to explore China.

Given the vastness of the country, I would love your recommendations on must-visit destinations. What do you think would make for an ideal itinerary? Have you encountered any challenges when traveling with young children?

We’re interested in experiencing a mix of urban life and natural beauty. We’re considering mid-August for our trip—could you share your thoughts on the best time to visit?

Also, how does public transport work in China? Would you recommend renting a car, or is it better to rely on public transportation?

Thank you in advance for your tips and suggestions!

  1. That sounds like an exciting trip! Traveling to China with a toddler and a baby can be a rewarding experience, and it’s great to see that you’re planning ahead. Here are some recommendations to help you create an ideal itinerary and make the most of your trip:

    Ideal Itinerary (2 Weeks)

    Week 1: Cities

    1. Beijing (4 Days)
    2. Places to Visit: The Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, and the Great Wall (consider a less crowded section like Mutianyu).
    3. Family-Friendly Activities: Visit the Beijing Aquarium or take a stroll in the Summer Palace.

    4. Xi’an (3 Days)

    5. Places to Visit: The Terracotta Warriors, City Wall, and Muslim Quarter for great food and culture.
    6. Family-Friendly: The city wall is stroller-friendly, and you can rent bikes or take a leisurely walk.

    Week 2: Nature and Relaxation

    1. Guilin & Yangshuo (4 Days)
    2. Nature Experience: Take a bamboo raft ride on the Li River and enjoy the stunning karst mountains. Yangshuo offers plenty of outdoor activities, including easy walks and parks.
    3. Family-Friendly: Visit the local farms or parks and enjoy the low-key environment, which is perfect with kids.

    4. Hangzhou (3 Days)

    5. Places to Visit: West Lake, tea plantations, and the Lingyin Temple.
    6. Family-Friendly Activities: Rent a pedal boat on West Lake, which can be a fun experience for your toddler.

    Best Time to Visit

Mid-August can be warm and humid in many parts of China, but it can still be an enjoyable time to visit, especially in the north (Beijing, Xi’an) where temperatures can be more manageable. Just pack lightweight clothing and stay hydrated, especially for the kids.

    Public Transport & Car Rental

    • Public Transport: Cities like Beijing and Shanghai have excellent public transportation systems, including subways and buses that are stroller-friendly, as well as clean and efficient high-speed trains for inter-city travel.
    • Cars: Renting a car is possible, but it can be challenging due to traffic and different driving styles. It’s generally easier to rely on public transport, taxis, or ride-hailing apps like Didi.

    Traveling with Small Kids

    • Considerations: Most cities are quite accommodating for families, but it’s essential to plan for downtime, especially with a toddler and a baby. Bring a lightweight stroller, baby carrier, and plenty of snacks and toys for entertainment during travel.
    • Healthcare: Familiarize yourself with the local healthcare options and have a basic medical kit on hand.

    Additional Tips

    • Accommodations: Opt for family-friendly hotels or serviced apartments that provide amenities like cribs and kitchen facilities.
    • Food: Many restaurants can accommodate dietary needs, but it’s a good idea to carry some snacks or baby food for the little ones.

Overall, with thoughtful planning and flexibility, you’ll have a wonderful time exploring China as a family! Enjoy your trip!
