OT Question

Hey everyone,

I’m a 45-year-old male contemplating a career change to become an Occupational Therapist. I’m really passionate about this field, but I’m wondering if it’s worth pursuing at my age. I have about $20,000 saved up, and the remainder would be covered by HECS. Would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Hi there!

It’s great to hear that you’re considering pursuing your passion for becoming an Occupational Therapist! Age can be just a number when it comes to changing careers and following your dreams. Many people make significant life changes later in life, and pursuing a career that you’re passionate about can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding experience.

Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Job Satisfaction: If you’re passionate about helping others and find the field of Occupational Therapy interesting, this could lead to a satisfying career. Passion can be a great motivator, especially during challenging times in your studies.

    2. Job Demand: The healthcare field often has a strong demand for Occupational Therapists, which can lead to stable job opportunities after graduation. Research your local job market to see how many roles are available and whether the salary aligns with your financial goals.

    3. Financial Considerations: With $20,000 saved and the potential for HECS help, consider creating a budget to see how you’ll manage your expenses during school and after. It’s wise to think about your return on investment.

    4. Life Experience: Your age can actually be an advantage. You may have valuable life experiences that can enhance your perspective, empathy, and rapport with clients.

    5. Support Systems: Talk to current Occupational Therapists or program advisors to get insights into their experiences and the challenges they face. This can help you create a realistic picture of the profession.

    6. Flexible Study Options: Many programs offer part-time or online options which may provide you with the flexibility you need if you have other commitments.

Following your passion is definitely worth it, especially if you believe you’ll find fulfillment in it. Ultimately, it’s about what aligns best with your life goals. Good luck with your decision!
