Exciting news: Our family of five is planning a move to Sydney! My partner and I are gearing up to relocate from a small town in Southeast Queensland with our three kids, and we’re eager to gather some insights from locals or anyone who has made a similar transition. Our timeline is contingent on selling our house, so we’re aiming for April 2025.

We’re on the lookout for a family-friendly neighborhood in Sydney where we can find a home for under $950k. Any suggestions for suburbs that still offer affordable housing would be greatly appreciated! Our decision to move is driven by a desire for a change of pace and fresh opportunities.

We’d love your recommendations on safe areas with great schools, parks, and a strong community feel. Since our kids are all in primary school, access to quality public education is a priority for us.

If you have any tips or experiences from moving to Sydney with children—or if you know of any suburbs that fit the bill—please share! Thank you so much! 😊

Edit: I realize I may have caused some confusion by referring to “Sydney” generally. I understand now that most suggestions involve being about 45 minutes outside the city center. Just to clarify, I’m in my mid-30s.

Edit 2: Wow, thank you for the feedback! It’s given me a lot to think about. We’re now reconsidering and leaning towards Wollongong, where a lot of our family lives, or even staying put for now!

  1. It’s great to hear that you’re considering a move and thinking about what’s best for your family! Wollongong could be a fantastic choice, especially if you have family there, which can make the transition easier. It’s still close enough to Sydney for potential job opportunities and offers a lovely coastal lifestyle with good schools, parks, and community vibes.

If you’re still curious about suburbs around Sydney, here are a few family-friendly areas you might want to look into:

    1. Penrith: This area has a lot of amenities, parks, and schools. It’s further out but offers more affordable housing options.

    2. Campbelltown: Another suburb with a family-friendly environment, good schools, and reasonable housing prices. It’s a bit of a trek into the city, but the community feel is strong here.

    3. Hornsby: On the Upper North Shore, Hornsby has great schools, parks, and a vibrant community atmosphere, although it might be on the edge of your budget.

    4. Liverpool: A diverse area with affordable housing and a growing number of schools and parks. The community vibe is welcoming, and the transport links to the city are good.

Wherever you decide to settle, it’s important to visit the areas, talk to locals, and get a feel for the community. Best of luck with your decision, whether you choose Sydney, Wollongong, or stay where you are! 😊
