Has the market for disability support workers become oversaturated?

I’ve frequently heard that there’s always a demand for disability support workers, yet I’ve been applying for positions in Geelong only to find over 200 applicants for a single role! Unfortunately, hireup hasn’t been helpful either. I’ve spoken with numerous support workers who secured jobs without any qualifications (I’m currently finishing a traineeship and plan to pursue further training), and I’m left wondering how that can be the case.

  1. It sounds like you’re navigating a challenging job market. While it’s true that there is a high demand for disability support workers, the competition can also be fierce, especially in certain areas like Geelong. Some reasons for this might be:

    1. High Turnover Rates: Many support roles experience high turnover, which can create a perception of ongoing demand, but it can also mean that there are a lot of applicants for each position when they open up.

    2. Diverse Entry Points: Some people may enter the field with little to no qualifications and gain experience quickly, making it easier for them to find work. This can lead to a situation where candidates with varying levels of experience are applying for the same positions.

    3. Employers’ Preferences: Some employers might prioritize attributes like empathy, reliability, and life experience over formal qualifications, which can make it challenging for those who are investing in education and training to compete.

    4. Networking and Connections: There is often a significant advantage to having connections in the community or within organizations, which can help candidates secure jobs more readily than others.

Continue to focus on your upskilling and networking—it can make a big difference. Maybe consider reaching out to support organizations or community groups in the area for potential job leads or advice. Additionally, tailoring your applications to highlight your specific skills and any relevant experience you have can also help you stand out in a crowded field. Good luck!
