Have Australians changed in terms of personality?

When I visited Australia nearly a decade ago, I remember a laid-back vibe among the locals. People seemed to take life at a relaxed pace, and while they weren’t overly friendly, there was a general sense of calm—no apparent stress.

However, upon my recent return, I noticed a stark contrast. It felt like everyone was in a hurry, rushing from one place to another. Even asking for directions resulted in annoyed responses, as if my questions were a nuisance. This was particularly evident during both of my visits to Sydney.

I’m curious—have there been significant changes in Australian society, or has the rising cost of living caused people to adopt a more hurried, stressful lifestyle, resembling that of cities like Hong Kong? Or could it be that my memories from my first trip are simply skewed?

  1. It’s interesting to hear about your observations regarding the changes in personality and the atmosphere in Australia, particularly in Sydney. Over the past decade, a lot has changed in urban areas, including rising costs of living, which can certainly contribute to a more fast-paced and stressed environment.

Australia, like many other places, has seen significant increases in housing prices and living expenses, especially in major cities. This economic pressure can impact people’s demeanor and contribute to a sense of urgency or irritability, especially in bustling areas like Sydney.

Additionally, the global pandemic has also shifted many aspects of life, including work dynamics, social interactions, and general public sentiment. People may have become more focused on their individual challenges, leading to a less relaxed interaction style.

It’s also worth considering that your previous visit may have coincided with a different social climate or a more relaxed time, contributing to your impressions. But overall, it’s possible that both societal changes and personal experiences are influencing the way you perceive locals today.

If you’re seeking that relaxed vibe, you might find it in quieter regions or smaller towns in Australia, where the pace of life can be quite different from major urban centers.
