Subject: Can UK Physician Assistants Work in Australia?

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right place to ask! My wife and I are planning to move to the Sydney area this summer for a few years. She is a Physician Assistant (PA) in the UK and completed all her education there. I’m curious if her qualifications and experience will be recognized in Australia, especially if the local job market is different. If her credentials aren’t sufficient, will she need to pursue additional schooling or certifications to practice there?

Thanks for your help! She’s researching this too, but I wanted to support her in any way I can.

  1. Hi there!

It’s great to hear that you and your wife are planning a move to Sydney! The role of a Physician Assistant (PA) in Australia is quite different from that in the UK. While PAs are recognized in some parts of Australia, their role is not as established or widespread as it is in the UK or the US. Here are a few points to consider:

    1. Registration and Accreditation: To practice as a PA in Australia, your wife would need to have her qualifications assessed by the Australian regulations and professional bodies. This typically involves submitting her credentials for review by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or relevant professional organizations.

    2. Workplace Opportunities: While she may find opportunities in certain healthcare settings, the job market for PAs in Australia is not as robust as in the UK. It’s worth exploring the job market in Sydney for PAs, as she may find roles that suit her skills or related positions in healthcare management or support.

    3. Further Education: Depending on the outcome of the assessment, your wife might need to complete additional courses or certifications to meet Australian standards. Some institutions offer bridging programs for internationally trained PAs.

    4. Alternative Roles: If PA roles are limited, she might want to look into related fields, such as nursing or healthcare administration, where her background would still be valuable.

It might be beneficial for her to reach out to Australian PAs or professional groups for insights and advice on navigating this transition. Good luck with your move!
