Box Jellies

I was informed some time ago that the open water on the side of Magnetic Island is safe for swimming. Is that accurate? And what about Fitzroy? Are there any other locations outside of netted areas where you can swim in seawater safely without needing a stinger suit?

  1. While Magnetic Island does have some areas that are considered safer for swimming, especially during the cooler months when box jellies are less prevalent, it’s always important to be cautious. The open water side can vary in safety depending on the time of year and local conditions.

Fitzroy Island similarly has designated swimming areas, but like anywhere in northern Queensland, the risk of box jellyfish is present, particularly from October to May. Outside of netted and stinger-safe zones, swimming without a stinger suit carries some risk, so it’s best to check local advice and stay informed about marine stinger warnings.

If you’re determined to swim outside netted areas, consider wearing a stinger suit for extra protection. Always prioritize safety and check with local rangers or information centers for the latest updates and advice before heading out to swim.
