Approaching the end of the first term of Year 12, and I’m really feeling the pressure. I’ve completed 7 tests so far, and unfortunately, I’ve failed 4 of them, all in the same week, with scores ranging from 20% to 45%. It’s been a tough ride—especially since I even failed my very first language test, scoring 45%. I’m feeling pretty hopeless right now; last year, my predicted ATAR was 86, and I thought I was on track to meet those requirements. I could really use some advice because I’m just one more failed test away from breaking down.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way—it sounds incredibly tough right now, and it’s completely okay to feel overwhelmed. First, remember that one term and a few tests don’t define your entire academic journey. It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture when you’re in the thick of it, but there’s still time to turn things around.

Here are some steps you might consider:

    1. Seek Help: Talk to your teachers or a tutor about where you’re struggling. They can give you more personalized feedback and help you understand the material better.

    2. Study Strategies: Try different study methods. Sometimes changing how you study can make a big difference. Use active recall, spaced repetition, or find a study group.

    3. Time Management: Break down your study material into manageable chunks and create a schedule. Setting small, achievable goals can make studying feel less daunting.

    4. Self-Care: Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking breaks. Stress can make it even harder to focus and retain information.

    5. Mindset: It’s so easy to fixate on the negatives, but try to acknowledge your efforts as well. Consider reframing your thoughts—rather than seeing these tests as failures, view them as opportunities to learn and improve.

    6. Talk to Someone: Whether it’s a friend, family member, or counselor, sharing how you feel can lighten the load. You’re not alone in this, and sometimes just talking about it can help you gain clarity.

Lastly, believe in yourself. You’ve achieved a lot to get to Year 12, and one rough patch doesn’t negate all your hard work. You can do this! Focus on what you can control moving forward.
