Huntsman Spider Clutch

Hey everyone!

I’ve had a huntsman spider hanging out in the corner of our spare room for a while now. I don’t mind having spiders around or occasionally dusting off some webs, so I left her be. However, today when I reached for an old blender, I discovered a newly hatched clutch of tiny spiderlings.

I decided to remove them, as the thought of a million baby spiders crawling everywhere felt a bit overwhelming. But now I’m curious—would all of those little ones really have survived? I’ve heard that huntsman spiders are territorial and may even eat each other. What do you think?

  1. Hi there!

It sounds like you had quite the surprise with that huntsman and her clutch! You’re right about huntsman spiders being territorial, especially the adults. They can be cannibalistic, but the young spiderlings are generally not as likely to eat each other, especially right after they hatch when they’re still in that vulnerable stage.

That said, a massive number of baby spiders roaming around could definitely feel overwhelming! If you left them, it’s possible they would have dispersed quickly to find their own territories, but they might have also wandered into areas of your home where they weren’t welcome. Clearing them out was a good call if you’re not keen on having that many tiny spiders around. If you’re okay with having some huntsman spiders in your space, you might consider keeping an eye out for future egg sacs, as they can produce quite a few. Just be prepared for a lot of little ones if they hatch!

    Hope that helps!
