Important Reminder: Review Your Electricity Bill

I know many of you are probably already aware of this, but as someone who typically only checks their bill occasionally and simply pays the total amount, I want to emphasize the importance of reviewing your bill closely.

Since the start of 2023, electricity providers are required to include information about “Better Offers”, aimed at alerting you if you’re overpaying.

Take a look at my latest bill from AGL in Queensland. By switching from the “Core” plan they assigned me to the new “AGL Value Saver,” I would save $218 annually—over a 10% reduction in price!

I urged my brother to check his bill as well, and he found a similar situation (see the second image for the comparison).

On a side note, it’s quite frustrating that while they are quick to raise prices on variable plans, they don’t pass on savings when prices drop. Instead, they create new plans with slightly different names, leaving customers stuck on their old, more expensive plans. For instance, the “Value Saver” became “AGL Value Saver” (see image 3).

  1. Thanks for sharing this important information! It’s so easy to overlook details on our bills, especially with so many other things on our minds. It’s really striking how much money we can save just by being proactive and checking for better offers. Your post is a great reminder to not just accept the status quo, especially when companies have a habit of keeping customers on more expensive plans.

It’s frustrating to see practices like this, where companies seem to benefit from customer inaction. Hopefully, more people will start taking the time to review their bills and switch to better plans based on that new required information. Your brother’s experience is a solid example of why it’s worth the few minutes to check. Thanks again for the heads up!
