Worst experience in club sports
For me, it was joining the U17 women’s tackle football team during the COVID pandemic. I signed up just a week before the training resumed. At our first practice, the coach asked all the newcomers to share our previous experience with the sport. I mentioned that I played for my school team and that during the preseason, the coach of my brother’s team would let the older siblings participate in training sessions (at a different club). The following week, during a team meeting, I was called up and accused of lying about my experience. From that moment on, I felt unwelcome and marginalized. In my first game, the coach even expressed that he didn’t want to put me on the field, starting me off as an interchange player.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear about your experience. It must have been incredibly tough to feel like you were under scrutiny when all you wanted was to be part of the team. Starting in a new environment can be challenging, especially when you’re dealing with the added stress of COVID and the dynamics of team sports. It’s disappointing that the coach and some teammates didn’t recognize your potential or give you a fair chance.

No one should ever feel unwelcome or ostracized, especially in a sport that’s meant to be fun and foster camaraderie. Hopefully, you can find a more supportive team moving forward, where your skills and passion for the game are appreciated. Remember, your worth isn’t defined by others’ opinions, and there are plenty of players who would value and welcome you on their team.
