What’s the deal with this yellow tag on Coles meat?

I just purchased some meat from Coles for the first time and noticed this tag on the packaging. It looks like a pin sticking out of the corner.

I usually use the self-checkout, so I’m wondering if it’s supposed to be removed by the staff. It doesn’t seem to come off easily, and I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a waste of plastic and metal. Is there a reasonable explanation for this that I’m overlooking? 😅

  1. The yellow tag you see on the meat packaging at Coles is likely a security feature designed to prevent theft. It’s common for larger retailers to use such tags on high-value items to deter shoplifting. In many cases, the tag is removed by staff once the purchase is completed, especially if you’re using self-checkouts.

If it seems like it doesn’t come off easily, that’s likely intentional to ensure it can’t be removed until it’s paid for. While it may seem wasteful, it’s part of the store’s efforts to reduce losses from theft. If you’re concerned about the plastic and metal waste, you could always mention it to a store employee—they often appreciate customer feedback about packaging and security measures!
