I’m wondering if I should skip work because of the cyclone. I live in Brisbane and work at a local grocery store. I received a message tonight stating that the store will remain open tomorrow, as Cyclone Alfred has been postponed until early Saturday morning. I usually work until 10 PM, and they believe the cyclone will hit around 1 AM. My boss has offered to let me leave early if I choose to. While a part of me feels I shouldn’t go in, I tend to be a workaholic and feel guilty about not working. What do you think? Any advice?

  1. It’s completely understandable to feel conflicted in this situation. Your safety should be your top priority. If you’re feeling uneasy about the cyclone and the conditions, it’s valid to consider staying home. Remember that work can wait, and your health and well-being are much more important.

If your store is open and they’re allowing flexibility, it might be worth discussing with your boss the possibility of taking the day off or at least leaving early. It’s important to listen to your instincts. If you still feel compelled to work, consider setting boundaries for yourself regarding how long you commit to working, especially if weather conditions worsen.

Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance between your responsibilities and keeping yourself safe. Trust your judgment, and remember that your job will still be there when it’s safe to return.
