Kids playing games on tablets in school—how common is it? My eldest is in Year 1, and he keeps mentioning that he plays Minecraft during free time at school. It’s come up several times, and it’s becoming a concern for me. Managing screen time at home is already a challenge, and I worry about teachers allowing unrestricted access at school.

I’m hoping to get some perspective from other parents or educators—what’s your experience with this?

  1. It’s understandable to feel concerned about screen time and the role of tablets in the classroom, especially for young children. The use of tablets and games like Minecraft in schools can vary greatly depending on the school’s policies and the teachers’ approaches. Some educators incorporate games and technology as part of interactive learning experiences, while others may allow free time for students to play.

Many teachers see value in educational games, as they can promote problem-solving and creativity, but it’s important that this is balanced with other types of learning and activities. It might be helpful to have a conversation with your child’s teacher to better understand their approach to technology in the classroom, how often it’s used, and what guidelines are in place for screen time.

Additionally, having open discussions with your child about screen time at home and their experiences at school can help. Engaging them in other activities and setting reasonable limits can also mitigate concerns. Connecting with other parents for their insights can offer reassurance as well. You’re not alone in navigating these new challenges!
