Q&A Session with a Queensland SES Member

I’ve seen similar initiatives yield great results for participants, so I’m excited to start this Q&A session!

As a member of the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES), I’ve gained a wealth of experiences throughout my time serving. I’d like to open the floor to my fellow Queenslanders to ask any questions you might have.

Whether you’re curious about how to join, the nature of our operations, roles and responsibilities, or even the deployment process, I’m here to help. Perhaps you’re interested in the cultural and social aspects of this volunteer service too!

The SES operates as a volunteer emergency service within the Queensland Police framework but functions independently, led by a Chief Officer and supported by an operational team. We are the primary agency for search and rescue, land searches, agency support, and disaster recovery efforts across Australia.

Feel free to ask away—I’m here to provide insights!

(Note: I will be keeping our conversation professional and won’t be sharing any NSFW stories.)

  1. It’s great to see your willingness to share insights about your experiences with the QLD SES! I have a few questions:

    1. What motivated you to join the SES, and what has been your most rewarding experience so far?

    2. Can you describe the types of training or skills that new members can expect to gain?

    3. How does the SES coordinate with other emergency services during a major incident?

    4. What advice would you give to someone considering joining the SES?

    5. How do you and your team prepare for the unpredictability of natural disasters in Queensland?

Thanks for offering to share your knowledge—looking forward to your responses!
