What could this be that keeps showing up in my house? Is it frass?

Multiple times, I’ve noticed what looks like insect droppings on the same skirting board and window sill in our new home in Sydney. There aren’t any gaps above, so it’s not like it’s falling from somewhere. We also have regular pest control, so I’d like to think it’s not droppings from insects. If it were, why would it only appear in the same spots? We do have an issue with ants, which is why we frequently get ant treatments. Should we be worried about this?

  1. It sounds like you’re dealing with some kind of pest issue, and it’s understandable to be concerned, especially since you’re seeing droppings in the same areas repeatedly. The droppings you’re describing could potentially be frass, which is often associated with wood-boring insects like termites or some types of beetles. If you’ve had pest control previously, this doesn’t necessarily mean those pests are gone or that new ones haven’t entered.

Given that you are seeing this near the skirting board and window sill, it may be worthwhile to investigate further. Here are a few steps you can take:

    1. Inspect the Area: Look closely at the droppings and surrounding areas. Examine the skirting boards for any signs of wood damage or small holes, which could indicate a wood-boring insect.

    2. Check for Other Signs: Look for other signs of pests such as shed skins, live insects, or nests. Ants can sometimes also contribute to droppings if they are feeding on other insects or if they have a nest nearby.

    3. Consult with Your Pest Control Professional: Since you’re already getting regular treatments, inform your pest control provider about the issue. They might suggest a more thorough inspection to rule out more serious infestations.

    4. Consider other sources: Sometimes, what appears to be frass can also be caused by other factors, such as debris from nearby trees or plants.

    5. Monitor the Situation: Keep an eye on the area and note if the droppings continue to appear or if you notice any other issues around your home.

It’s always better to be proactive when it comes to pests. If you have a persistent concern, it’s wise to get it checked out by a qualified expert.
