City of Sydney Launches Plans for New Town Hall Square

The City of Sydney is pleased to announce the commencement of the Town Hall Square project, a significant development aimed at enhancing the city’s public spaces. Recently, the City Council unanimously approved a motion to accelerate the delivery of this much-anticipated project, integrating it into the 2025/26 budget. Demolition of current structures is scheduled to begin within the coming years, paving the way for a vibrant new civic hub.

For over thirty years, the City of Sydney has been steadily acquiring properties situated opposite the historic Town Hall. This strategic effort aims to create a spacious and welcoming civic square, aligning with Sydney’s status as Australia’s leading global city. Such civic spaces are essential for accommodating the city’s growing population—both residents and workers—as well as hosting millions of local, national, and international visitors.

Historically, the ongoing negotiations regarding commercial leases within the property have been affected by the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. These circumstances temporarily hindered progress on the project. More recently, it has become evident that the buildings on this site—many of which are aging—pose increasing maintenance and upgrade costs to meet modern standards and attract tenants.

Given that the future Town Hall Square involves redevelopment plans that include demolition of existing structures, investing substantial resources into refurbishing these aging buildings would not be financially prudent. Instead, the City is now re-evaluating the project timeline, with an emphasis on moving forward more swiftly based on current conditions.

This initiative echoes the wisdom of urban design expert Jan Gehl, who said, “Cultures and climates differ all over the world, but people are the same. They will gather in public if you give them a good place to do it.” With this new development, Sydney will soon have an inviting public space that fosters community and connection.

The City of Sydney remains dedicated to creating vibrant, accessible, and well-designed public spaces that serve the needs of its residents and visitors alike. Stay tuned for further updates on the Town Hall Square project as it progresses toward realization.
