Celebrating One Year in Australia: A Heartfelt Reflection

Today marks a significant milestone—one year since I embarked on my journey to Australia. It’s an opportunity to reflect on my experiences, express gratitude, and share the profound impact this country has had on my life.

The Journey Begins

Three years ago, I received an invitation to apply for a skilled immigration visa to Australia. The process was extensive and demanding, taking nearly two years and requiring a financial investment of approximately $25,000 USD. I had to sell my belongings—my car, house—and close all my accounts in the United States to qualify. The journey was nerve-wracking, filled with uncertainty, and marked by moments of doubt. My knowledge of Australia before arriving was limited to kangaroos, koalas (which I haven’t yet seen in the wild), and the hot climate—an environment I love coming from Texas.

My Arrival and First Impressions

On August 15th, 2019, I packed my remaining belongings into three suitcases and headed to the airport. The journey was meticulous, with a few hiccups along the way—including a TSA incident where they opened one of my suitcases to remove a legal shaving razor, leaving my belongings somewhat scattered. I arrived on August 17th, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension, but I was determined to embrace this new chapter.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Australia

Through this experience, I have come to see Australia as more than just a destination—it’s become a place that makes me feel genuinely valued as a human being. After 32 years on this planet, I’ve found a place where I am recognized for my feelings, concerns, and fears, not just as a number or a paycheck.

Thank you, Australia, for providing a fair and respectful environment. I appreciate that I can earn a livable wage commensurate with my university degree, allowing me to pursue a career aligned with my passions rather than settling for minimum wage roles. The healthcare system here is another aspect I am grateful for—access to medical care without the burden of exorbitant upfront costs is something I cherish deeply.

A Better Way of Living

One of the aspects I admire most is Australia’s approach to retail and food. The absence of large corporations like Walmart means local stores thrive, and there’s a sense of community that’s often missing elsewhere. I appreciate that food here is less chemical-laden; everything tastes authentic and natural. Although I still miss fresh cilantro from Texas, making do with what’s available has become part of my appreciation for local produce.

Safety and Respect

My experiences with law enforcement have been respectful and humane. The first time I was pulled over for a random breath test, I approached the situation calmly, and the officers’ concern for my well-being—asking if I was okay—left a lasting impression. While I still carry some apprehension about law enforcement, my interactions have helped ease those fears.

A Personal Reflection

This journey has been transformative, filled with moments of gratitude, learning, and growth. I am deeply thankful for the opportunities and kindness I’ve encountered along the way. Australia has allowed me to feel truly human—valued, respected, and free to be myself.

In closing, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to this incredible country. Your openness, fairness, and community spirit have made a profound difference in my life. Thank you for welcoming me and helping me feel alive.

Here’s to many more years of growth, connection, and gratitude.
