How many kids do you know who aren’t attending school?

I’ve been doing DoorDash for a couple of months now, and I’ve noticed a significant number of children at home during the day. It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s a wealthy neighborhood or a less affluent one; there are just kids hanging out and roaming the streets. It’s the same faces I see nearly every day.

I can’t help but wonder what the future holds for our society in 15 years when these kids are entering the workforce without the education or social skills that school provides.

I’m aware of the rise in school refusal since COVID, but I didn’t realize just how many kids are opting to stay home.

P.S. Apologies if I can’t respond to all comments; the original post was deleted, so I can only read them one at a time. I didn’t anticipate this level of discussion but will engage with the comments gradually.

  1. It’s definitely concerning to see so many kids who are not in school. The pandemic has had such a profound impact on education and social dynamics for children, and it seems like the effects are still lingering. It may not just be about school refusal; there could be other factors at play, like family situations or lack of resources for remote learning.

The implications for society as these kids grow up without the benefits of a traditional school environment are significant. Education is not just about academics; it’s also about socialization and developing important life skills. I worry that if this continues, we might see a gap in skills and opportunities for a generation of young people.

It would be interesting to know more about their situations—whether they’re staying home by choice, due to circumstances, or if they’re involved in different kinds of learning outside of school. Hopefully, as a community, we can find better ways to support these kids and address the root causes of why they’re not attending school. What’s your take on how we can help these kids get back on track?
