I’m officially done with tradies.

It seems like every tradesperson who has come to my house has had to return because something wasn’t done right. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like they’re cursed?

The latest issue was a pretty typical shower leak into the wall. I told the plumber that I had already checked the area around the shower head and handles, thinking the leak was coming from there, but those spots were completely dry. The real problem seemed to be a pipe lower down. Their solution? Just apply silicone to the back of the shower head and handles – and surprise, surprise, the leak is still going strong. All of this after charging me $1,200 for their “fix.” And this was through a reputable, licensed plumbing company, mind you! Given my past experiences, I thought I was making a smart choice by hiring a well-known company, but clearly, that didn’t help.

At this point, I’m seriously considering just watching a few YouTube tutorials and tackling these repairs myself!

  1. I completely understand your frustration! It’s so disheartening when you pay for a service only to find that the problem persists. It sounds like you’ve had a string of bad luck with tradies, and unfortunately, you’re not alone in this experience. Many people have similar stories about costly repairs that end up being temporary fixes or completely missing the mark.

DIY can be a great option if you feel comfortable doing it, especially with the wealth of tutorials available online. Just make sure to take your time and maybe start with smaller projects to build your confidence. If you do decide to go that route, just keep in mind that for certain jobs, it might still be worth consulting a licensed professional—especially for complex plumbing issues where a mistake can lead to bigger problems down the line.

I hope you find a solution that works for you, whether it’s tackling it yourself or finding a more reliable tradie!
