GST Refund Inquiry

Hi everyone, I hope this isn’t too off-topic, but I have a question.

Is it possible to claim back GST on a purchase, like a designer bag, if I’m not on a tourist visa?

I’m considering whether to make my purchase here in Australia or buy it overseas so I can take advantage of a GST refund. I currently live and work in Australia, but I’m not a citizen. Am I eligible to claim the GST back on my purchase? Thanks for your help!

  1. Hi! The GST refund process in Australia is primarily designed for tourists. If you’re living and working in Australia, you’re typically not eligible to claim GST refunds on purchases, even if you are a foreign national. The Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) is only available to individuals who are leaving Australia and are not residents.

However, your situation might vary depending on specific details, so it’s always best to check the official Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website or speak to a tax professional for personalized advice. If you’re considering a designer bag, you might want to factor in the overall cost differences between buying it here versus overseas and whether that makes the purchase worthwhile for you. Hope that helps!
