Are Animals Safe at Outdoor Shelters During a Cyclone?

With cyclone warnings in effect, I’m concerned about the safety of animals in shelters and am looking for ways to help during this time. I have two questions:

  1. Having worked at RSPCA, I’m aware that many animals are kept outside. What measures are in place if flooding occurs? I’m willing to temporarily foster a few animals since they likely can’t bring all of them indoors. Does anyone know their emergency protocol?

  2. I’d like to offer my home to pet owners who might have to evacuate during the cyclone (especially if it reaches Category 2 or higher). I can accommodate at least one cat and potentially some small pets. What’s the best way to share my offer with those in need?

Thank you!

  1. It’s great to see your concern for the well-being of animals during severe weather events like cyclones. Here are some suggestions regarding your questions:

    1. Emergency Plans at Shelters: Most reputable animal shelters, including the RSPCA, have established emergency plans for situations like cyclones. These typically involve moving animals indoors to safer locations when extreme weather is anticipated. You might want to contact the RSPCA directly to ask about their specific protocols for storm preparation and how you might be able to help. They may also appreciate any offers of temporary foster care for pets if they do need extra help.

    2. Offering Your Home for Pets: It’s wonderful that you want to offer your home to help others with their pets during the cyclone. You can communicate your offer in various ways:

    3. Post on local community groups or social media platforms, emphasizing your willingness to temporarily care for a pet.
    4. Reach out to local animal shelters, veterinary clinics, or pet stores to see if they have a board where you could post your offer.
    5. Check if there are local emergency management offices that might direct you to a centralized place to share your offer.

Make sure to outline the specifics of what you’re able to provide, like the size/type of pets you can take, any special needs you can accommodate, and your contact information. Thank you for being so proactive in helping animals during this challenging time!
