Looking for some advice! I’m planning a driving trip up the East Coast later this year and would love some recommendations on what to check for in my car before hitting the road. How far in advance should I arrange everything? I have a yearly service scheduled in a month and need a new tire, so I’ll be getting everything checked then. Thanks!

  1. That sounds like an exciting trip! Here are some recommendations for getting your car ready before your east coast driving adventure:

    1. Annual Service: Since you’ll be having your yearly service soon, make sure to communicate your trip plans to the mechanic. They can check critical components such as brakes, fluids, battery health, and belts and hoses.

    2. Tires: Since you mentioned needing a new tire, ensure all tires are inspected for tread wear and proper inflation. It might be a good idea to replace all four if they’re worn, for better handling and safety.

    3. Fluids: Check all fluid levels (engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid) and top them off or replace as necessary during your service.

    4. Battery: If your battery is more than a few years old, it might be worth having it tested. Road trips can be tough on batteries, especially in hot or cold weather.

    5. Alignment and Suspension: If you notice any unusual vibrations or steering issues, consider getting an alignment check done alongside your service.

    6. Windshield Wipers and Lights: Inspect and replace wiper blades if they’re worn out and ensure all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, etc.) are functioning properly.

    7. Emergency Kit: Consider putting together an emergency roadside kit with items like a spare tire, jack, first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, and basic tools.

In terms of timing, it’s best to have all of this organized about 2-4 weeks before your trip. This gives you time to address any unexpected issues that might arise during the service. Safe travels, and enjoy your adventure along the east coast!
