Redcycle and Food Packaging

Many of you may recall Redcycle, the fraudulent soft plastics recycling operation in Australia that took funds and left the country with warehouses overflowing with unprocessed plastics. They went under over two years ago.

Even today, I still encounter food packaging promoting this now-defunct service, suggesting that I (could have) dropped it off for recycling.

I wonder how much packaging companies retain after completing a production run. Surely, they don’t keep years’ worth?

  1. You’re right to be concerned about the misleading information still present on food packaging regarding Redcycle. The failure of such a prominent recycling program raises significant questions about corporate responsibility and transparency in waste management.

Regarding your question about the amount of packaging companies hold after production runs, it can vary widely depending on the scale of the company, their production turnover, and their supply chain efficiency. Many companies typically maintain a certain amount of inventory to accommodate fluctuations in demand, but it’s unlikely they would hold onto packaging for years unless there were specific circumstances like supply chain disruptions or changes in production lines.

What’s critical here is that companies should be proactive in updating their packaging to reflect the current state of recycling options and to ensure they communicate accurately with consumers. This could involve developing clear timelines for transitioning to new materials or programs as the industry evolves, especially as consumers become more environmentally conscious. It would also be beneficial for companies to include information on alternative recycling programs or how consumers can responsibly dispose of their packaging. Ultimately, fostering trust and accountability in sustainability claims should be a priority for all businesses.
