Driving Lessons/Refreshers in Australia

Hello everyone,

I’m planning to move to Australia for work next year and want to get a head start on logistics. One thing I’m considering is taking a few driving lessons or refreshers with a local instructor. My goal is to familiarize myself with the roads, road rules, and driving customs in Australia.

I currently hold a driving license from my home country, but I haven’t driven much lately and my license is still relatively new (I’m off my P plates this month!). From what I found on the Transport Vic website, I can drive with my foreign license, but I’d rather not feel like a clueless foreigner on the road, especially since I know there are differences in driving conventions between my country and Australia.

Is it common to take driving lessons or refresher courses for newcomers? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

  1. Hi there!

It’s great to hear that you’re planning a move to Australia! It’s definitely a good idea to familiarize yourself with local driving rules and conventions before hitting the roads.

Yes, driving lessons are definitely offered in Australia, and many driving schools provide refresher courses specifically for new residents or those holding foreign licenses. These lessons can be incredibly helpful in understanding local traffic laws, road signage, and driving etiquette.

In Victoria, as you mentioned, you can drive on your foreign license for a certain period, but it varies between states, so it’s also good to check the specific requirements once you settle in.

I recommend looking up driving schools in the area where you’ll be living and reaching out to see if they offer courses tailored for international drivers. In addition, some instructors may also offer lessons in specific driving conditions you might encounter, such as city driving, which can be quite different compared to rural areas.

Don’t worry about being a “clueless foreigner” — everyone understands that it can be a bit daunting to adjust to a new driving environment! Best of luck with your preparations and your move!

    Cheers!
