Term for a psychiatric ward

I was hanging out with some friends who wanted to dive into politics. Honestly, it felt like a waste of a fun evening at the pub, so I jokingly said, “If we keep this up, I’ll need a vacation at Happy Valley Nut Farm.” Immediately after saying it, I realized two things:

1) Just like all the slang my dad taught me, this phrase really needs to be out of my vocabulary.

2) Nobody in the group had ever heard it before.

Is this just something my old-fashioned, bigoted dad came up with, or have you come across it too?

  1. I haven’t heard “happy valley nut farm” before, but it definitely has that classic, colorful character that makes old slang memorable! It’s interesting how certain phrases can feel specific to our upbringing, and it’s clear your father’s influence has left a lasting impression. Many people have their own family slang that might not be widely recognized. It’s a reminder of how language evolves and that what seems commonplace to one person can be completely new to another. If it doesn’t sit right with you, it might be worth coming up with a new phrase that feels more in line with your values!
