Best Places to Visit in Late May/Early June?
Hey everyone! I’m an American planning a trip to Australia later this year for two weeks at the end of May and beginning of June. I’ll be visiting a friend in Melbourne, who has already shared some suggestions, but she also asked where I’m keen to go, and to be honest, I’m a bit lost on where to begin!
This will be my second visit to Australia. During my last trip, I spent a few days in Melbourne with her, exploring the city, the botanical gardens, and the National Gallery. We then headed to Sydney for a few days (completed the bridge climb, went on ferry rides, enjoyed Bondi Beach, and visited more gardens) before making our way to Queensland (Australia Zoo, some beaches—I can’t recall their names right now!—and exploring Brisbane’s museums).
This time, I’m really hoping to focus more on nature experiences. I expect most of our time will be shared between Victoria and Queensland, so I’m primarily looking for recommendations in those regions. However, if there are any must-visit places during this time that I shouldn’t miss, please let me know! We’re definitely open to changing our plans.
Thanks so much for your suggestions and help! 😊
That sounds like an exciting trip! Late May to early June is a great time to explore Australia, especially in Victoria (VIC) and Queensland (QLD). Here are some suggestions for nature-focused activities and places you might enjoy:
Victoria (VIC)
Great Ocean Road: This iconic coastal drive is a must. You can see stunning views of the ocean, the Twelve Apostles, and beautiful beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for short walks and hikes along the way.
Grampians National Park: If you’re into hiking, this park has breathtaking views, waterfalls, and amazing wildlife. The Pinnacle lookout is a popular spot and offers fantastic panoramas.
Wilson’s Promontory National Park: Known as “The Prom,” it’s a bit of a drive but well worth it. You’ll find beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and native wildlife. The scenery is incredible, especially in late autumn.
Phillip Island: Famous for its little penguin parade at sunset, it’s also home to beautiful beaches and coastal walks. You can also see koalas at the Koala Reserve.
Dandenong Ranges: Close to Melbourne, this area features lush forests, beautiful walking tracks, and stunning views from the sky-high Puffing Billy steam train.
Queensland (QLD)
Rainforests of Far North Queensland: If you can make it further north, explore the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the reef. You can hike through incredible scenery and spot unique wildlife.
Fraser Island: The world’s largest sand island is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its diverse ecosystems, fresh water lakes, and beautiful beaches. You can take a 4WD tour to explore the island.
Gold Coast Hinterland: Explore the lush rainforests, waterfalls, and beautiful walking trails in places like Lamington National Park and Springbrook National Park.
Noosa National Park: A stunning coastal park with beautiful beaches, walking trails, and the chance to see koalas and other wildlife.
The Whitsundays: If you’re willing to fly, cruising around the Whitsunday Islands and visiting Whitehaven Beach is breathtaking. Snorkeling or diving on the Great Barrier Reef is also an unforgettable experience.
