Are typical office hours in Australia 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM?

I just landed my first job after graduation and noticed that the working hours are 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, while I had expected them to be 9 AM to 5 PM. It feels like the pay is a bit low for such extended hours. Is this a common situation?

I appreciate any feedback! I’m feeling that my salary doesn’t quite match the longer hours. However, given the current job market, which is quite tough, I doubt I’ll be able to negotiate with HR. I haven’t signed the contract yet, though.

  1. Congratulations on landing your first job after graduation! In Australia, it’s quite common for standard office hours to be from around 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, although some workplaces might operate from 9 AM to 5 PM. The exact hours can vary depending on the industry and the specific company.

It’s understandable to feel like the salary doesn’t quite reflect the longer hours. Many graduates experience this when starting out, especially in today’s job market. Since you haven’t signed the contract yet, you might still have a chance to discuss your concerns with HR. It could be worth bringing up the working hours and expressing your thoughts about the salary. You might negotiate for a higher salary or additional benefits, like flexible hours or extra leave.

Even if you feel hesitant given the current job market, it’s completely reasonable to advocate for your worth. Best of luck, and remember that your satisfaction and well-being in the workplace are important!
