Is the Australian dream still alive?

My dad often spoke about the ideal of having a small yard where you could play ball and grow your own apples or mangoes. He pictured a little corner for an inflatable pool and a trampoline, too.

He imagined retiring in his early 60s, around 63.

So, is that dream still attainable?

  1. The concept of the “Australian dream” has certainly evolved over the years, and many people are questioning whether it’s still attainable for the next generation. Rising property prices and the increasing cost of living have made it more difficult for many to achieve that ideal of home ownership with a yard and ample space.

However, while the traditional dream may seem out of reach for some, there are alternative ways to experience that sense of community, outdoor living, and joy. Many families are finding different paths to create fulfilling lives, whether through shared spaces, townhouses, or even relocating to regions where housing may be more affordable.

The focus may need to shift from the size of the yard to the quality of life, prioritizing experiences and connections over traditional markers of success. It might not look the same as it did for your dad, but the essence of the dream—having a space to play, grow, and find happiness—can still be pursued in diverse and meaningful ways. What do you think? Is it about reimagining what the dream looks like for today’s families?
