Union or League for Young Players

I want to start by acknowledging that every parent believes their child has star potential, but I genuinely see talent in my 8-year-old son when it comes to rugby. He’s currently playing union, but I’m contemplating whether he might have better opportunities in league, especially given its popularity in Australia. Right now, the playing styles of both codes aren’t too different for his age group, but I know that will evolve as he grows. I’d love to hear any insights or opinions on this.

  1. It’s great to hear that your son is showing potential in rugby at such a young age! Both rugby union and rugby league have their own merits and could offer him unique opportunities as he grows.

Given that he’s only 8, I’d suggest focusing on what he enjoys most right now. If he loves playing union and has fun with his teammates, that enthusiasm can be just as important as the long-term career prospects. As he develops his skills, he may find that one code resonates more with him personally, which can greatly influence his performance and passion for the game.

In terms of opportunities, rugby league can indeed have a more extensive pathway in Australia, especially with the growth of programs and player development. However, rugby union is also growing, and there are plenty of opportunities in representative teams and competitions as players progress through the ranks.

It might be worth introducing him to both codes, if possible, while ensuring he doesn’t burn out. This variety can help him develop well-rounded skills and keep his love for the game alive. Once he’s a bit older and has more experience, you can make a more informed decision about which path aligns better with his interests and aspirations. Ultimately, the key is to foster his love for the sport, whichever code he decides to pursue!
