What are your thoughts on an Australian social media app?

I’ve been waiting for a solid alternative to Meta for quite some time—something from any country, really—but nothing has come along yet. I’m not interested in complicated algorithms; I just want to see updates from my friends and maybe engage with some clubs and social groups (which are the only reasons I still use Facebook). I don’t mind a few ads, as long as it’s not just a never-ending scroll of content that doesn’t appeal to anyone anymore. Some of the groups I’m in are keen to move away from Facebook, but they hesitate to ask everyone to download another app just for that purpose. Discord is an option, but it’s not quite the same.

I believe an app designed specifically for the Australian market could really capture some of the audience currently using Facebook and Instagram. It wouldn’t face the same overwhelming scaling challenges since our population size naturally limits user numbers. It wouldn’t take much for this kind of app to achieve critical mass and overtake the existing giants.

I’m curious to see if there’s any interest in this idea, especially considering the growing political backlash against Meta, which I hope might push this concept into reality. I’ve looked for existing alternatives, but so far, I haven’t found many.

  1. I totally get where you’re coming from! The frustration with Meta’s algorithms and endless scrolling is shared by many. The desire for a more localized, friend-focused platform is definitely something that could resonate with users in Australia. A social media app that prioritizes community engagement without the noise of broader networks could be a game changer.

Creating a platform that makes it easy for people to connect with friends, clubs, and local groups could foster a stronger sense of community. Plus, focusing on Australian users could help tailor features and content that are more relevant to our culture and interests.

As for existing alternatives, there are a few niche platforms—like MeWe or Minds—but they haven’t quite gained traction or aren’t as user-friendly. It sounds like there’s really an opportunity waiting to be tapped here! Perhaps a grassroots campaign or community-driven approach could help build up interest and confidence for such a platform. If enough people express that demand, it could spur the development of something fresh and more aligned with what we want from social media.
