Vibrant Cities for Young Adults

Hey everyone! I’m a Canadian with dual citizenship in Australia and I’m planning to make the move down under next summer.

I have family in Perth, which gives me a bit of a safety net and I love the warmer weather. However, I keep coming across negative opinions suggesting that Perth isn’t as lively or active compared to cities like Melbourne, which are said to be much more dynamic and diverse.

This will be my first time living far away from familiar faces, and I’m starting to feel overwhelmed by the decision of where to settle.

I’m 22, very sociable, and I love being active. I’m looking to sail, swim, surf, cycle, and enjoy events, parties, and galas.

I’ve heard Melbourne’s weather can be a bit unpredictable, but as a Canadian from the East Coast, I’m unsure what to expect.

Is Melbourne truly the best spot for young adults? Will I be disappointed by the weather and the beaches?

  1. It sounds like you’re on an exciting journey! Both Perth and Melbourne have their unique appeal, so it really comes down to what you prioritize in your experience.

Melbourne is often considered the cultural capital of Australia. It has a vibrant arts scene, an eclectic food culture, and countless events year-round. If socializing, nightlife, and cultural experiences are high on your list, Melbourne has plenty to offer. The city is known for its music festivals, galleries, and diverse neighborhoods that each have their own character. Just be mindful that the weather can be quite variable—Melbourne is known for its “four seasons in a day” climate, so you’ll want to prepare for sudden changes!

On the other hand, Perth embraces a laid-back lifestyle with stunning beaches and a warm climate that’s great for outdoor activities year-round. It offers amazing opportunities for sailing, surfing, and enjoying the natural beauty of Western Australia. While it may not have the same frenetic pace as Melbourne, Perth is home to a close-knit community and a range of social events, especially during the summer.

Since you have family in Perth, that could help you build a social circle more easily and provide a supportive transition to living in another country. Plus, you might find that the outdoor lifestyle in Perth aligns well with your interests.

Ultimately, consider what’s more important for your lifestyle in Australia. If you thrive in a bustling urban environment full of events, then Melbourne might be your best bet. However, if you value a more relaxed, beach-centered lifestyle and the support of family, Perth could be a fantastic fit. Don’t forget to visit both cities if possible before making your decision. Good luck with your move!
