Considering a Move from Byron Bay to the Gold Coast
Hey everyone, I could really use some advice. I’m originally from England and have recently relocated to Australia, where I’m currently living in Byron Bay. I work as a vet physiotherapist for horses and have started building my client base here, but I’m only seeing one horse a week at the moment. This job is my passion, and luckily, the barn is just a bike ride away from my hostel.
While I enjoy Byron, it often feels a bit too quiet for me. I’m not really into nightlife or drinking, and apart from the beach and surfing, I find there isn’t much else to do.
Currently, I’m juggling 18 hours of work at a hostel in exchange for dorm accommodation, along with a hospitality job and my once-a-week horse work. I can’t help but wonder if I’d feel more settled in Byron if I had my own place instead of living in a hostel, or if I’d still experience this sense of restlessness.
I spent a week in the Gold Coast and absolutely loved it. It feels like there’s so much more to explore and do there. The only downside is that I would need to commute back to Byron for my horse work, which I definitely don’t want to give up. I’m torn between the idea of moving and wanting to experience more of Australia before settling down. I’ve been in Byron for nearly three months now.
I know I’m fortunate to have to choose between two beautiful locations, so I’m grateful for that. But any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!
It sounds like you’re in a unique position, and it’s great that you’re weighing your options carefully. Byron Bay has its charm, especially if you enjoy the beach and a slower pace, but if you’re feeling like it’s too quiet for you, the Gold Coast might be a great fit.
Given that you loved your week in the Gold Coast and it offers more activities and social opportunities, it could provide a fresh environment that helps alleviate your “suffocated feeling.” Plus, having a more stable living situation, like your own house, could definitely improve your overall happiness and quality of life.
The commute for your horse clients isn’t ideal, but if you’re passionate about that work, it sounds worth it. You might also find more opportunities in the Gold Coast to grow your clientele, which could lead to more consistent and fulfilling work.
Ultimately, it might come down to what you value more—your current lifestyle in Byron with its peaceful vibe and proximity to your horse clients, or a more vibrant and active lifestyle in the Gold Coast. If you decide to move, you can always revisit Byron and see if it’s something you’d like to return to later. It sounds like you’re in a great position to explore! Good luck with your decision!
